Workshops

APLIC provides workshops (short courses) in conjunction with its annual meetings, and can be requested at other times as requested by members, agencies, and NGOs. Short courses offer a 1.5-day workshop on avian/power line issues, including:

  • Electrical Utility Regulatory Overview: Utility missions, structures, and compliance.
  • Laws and Permits: An overview of laws protecting avian species and applicable permits.
  • Electricity 101: An introduction to electrical systems.
  • Birds 101: An overview of avian ecology.
  • Basics of Avian Electrocutions and Solutions: Factors influencing electrocution risk.
  • Bird Nests on Utility Poles: Species that nest on power poles, reliability impacts, and nest management.
  • Basics of Avian Collisions: Causes of and Solutions for avian collisions with power lines.
  • Project Planning and Mitigation: minimizing avian impacts associated with new power line projects.
  • Vegetation Management: minimizing avian impacts associated with vegetation management in power line right-of-ways.
  • Avian Protection Plan Guidelines: developing and implementing an effective APP.

APLIC short courses are instructed by APLIC member utilities and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Workshop attendees are also welcome to attend the open APLIC business meeting, which is often held for a half day immediately following the short course. Open business meetings often feature agency partner updates, member utility initiatives, research results, and discussion of emerging avian protection issues.
